Hydrogen Peroxide is one of those Old-School remedies that has stood the test of time but is also backed by science. I'm a huge fan of hydrogen peroxide for many ailments but when it comes to treating cuts and scrapes at home, hydrogen peroxide has always been a go-to in our household. I’ve used it for years, not just for its satisfying fizz, but because it’s helped prevent infection and support quick healing time and time again. It cleans wounds brilliantly, lifting out dirt and debris. It can stop minor cuts from getting infected, especially the grotty ones. Healing always looks clean and fast. In my experience, hydrogen peroxide is an important item to keep in your natural first aid kit. Make sure it's Food Grade and that you dilute appropriately depending on the percentage hydrogen peroxide you purchase. We get ours here. https://www.hydrogenperoxideaustralia.com.au/ But What Actually is Hydrogen Peroxide? Hydrogen peroxide is a pale blue liquid with the chemical formula H₂O₂ . That's two hydrogen atoms and two oxygen atoms per molecule. It’s very similar to water (H₂O), but with one extra oxygen atom , which makes it much more reactive. This extra oxygen is what gives hydrogen peroxide its bubbling, disinfecting power. When it breaks down, it releases oxygen gas (O₂) and water (H₂O), which is why it fizzes when you put it on a wound. It’s literally releasing oxygen as it reacts with enzymes and bacteria. What Other Uses Does Hydrogen Peroxide Have? Here are some other tried-and-true, passed-down uses of hydrogen peroxide that many still swear by: Mouth Rinse A splash in a glass of water (never straight!) was used as a mouthwash to freshen breath and soothe sore gums. Some even used it on cold sores or mouth ulcers. Teeth Whitening Long before whitening strips, people would brush with a paste of bicarb soda and a drop of hydrogen peroxide to lift surface stains from teeth. Sinus and Chest Relief There are stories of people using diluted hydrogen peroxide drops in the ears at the first sign of a cold, or even in steam inhalations or nebulisers to try to ward off chest infections. Foot Soaks and Fungal Care Mixed in with warm water for a foot soak to help with cracked heels, smelly feet, or fungal issues like athlete’s foot. Stain Remover A household cleaning secret: hydrogen peroxide on blood, wine or sweat stains. Especially on whites dabbed, left to fizz, and rinsed out. Plant Care Used by gardeners to add oxygen to soil or combat root rot. Just a diluted splash in watering cans. Hydrogen peroxide has been a medicine cabinet staple for decades, thanks to its versatility and that unmistakable bubbling clean. There’s no denying the lived experience behind these old-school tricks. Want to learn more behind the science of hydrogen peroxide? It plays roles in: Killing pathogens Modulating immune response Promoting angiogenesis (formation of new blood vessels) Supporting cell signalling involved in tissue repair I’d love to know, do you use hydrogen peroxide at home?
