Homeopathy is a 200-year-old system of medicine that uses highly diluted natural substances to stimulate the body’s own healing response. In day-to-day life this means you can keep a small kit of remedies on hand and call on them for common complaints like bruises, minor fevers, travel sickness, or swollen tonsils. When chosen well a single remedy can act quickly, gently, and without the side-effects often seen with conventional drugs.

The word Homeopathy comes from two Greek roots:

Homeo- (from homoios) means “similar” or “like.”
-pathy (from pathos) means “suffering” or “disease.”

So, homeopathy literally means “similar suffering.”

This reflects the core principle of homeopathy:

"Like cures like."

In other words, a substance that causes symptoms in a healthy person can be used (when prepared in a homeopathic dilution) to treat those same symptoms in someone who is unwell.

For example:

Coffee can cause sleeplessness and restlessness in healthy people.
The homeopathic remedy Coffea is used to treat insomnia with racing thoughts.

This “law of similars” is what sets homeopathy apart from conventional medicine, which often works on the principle of opposites (e.g. painkillers to numb pain, or anti-diarrhoeals to stop diarrhoea).

How home prescribing works

Observe the person, not just the problem
Homeopathy treats “the patient in the disease” rather than “the disease in the patient.” Note what makes the symptoms better or worse, how the person feels emotionally, and any unusual sensations or cravings. For example, sore throat which is better with cold/ hot liquid, patient is calm/ irritable, craving sweet/ salty foods.
Match the remedy picture
Each remedy has a detailed profile called a Materia Medica entry. Your job is to find the remedy whose profile matches the total picture you have observed. Think of this as a book of remedy profiles.

It gives detailed descriptions of each homeopathic remedy: what it’s made from, its mental and physical symptoms, modalities (what makes symptoms better or worse), and characteristic traits.

You use it after you’ve narrowed down a few remedy options to help you compare them and choose the one that best matches the whole picture.

Example entry (simplified):
Pulsatilla

Emotionally changeable, weepy, wants comfort
Symptoms change location or nature
Worse in a warm room, better in fresh air
Commonly used for earaches, colds, and hormonal imbalance

Try using this Materia Medica online . Simply put your symptom into the Search bar (Sore Throat for example) and it will list all of the potential remedy that fit "Sore Throat". You can then click on each one and match it with the patient.
Using a repertory to narrow the field
A repertory is an index of symptoms that points you toward candidate remedies. Start with the main symptom, add two or three striking features, then look for the remedy that appears in most rubrics.

It’s organised by body part or symptom category (like "Headaches," "Sleep," or "Skin").

Under each symptom, it lists remedies that are known to help, based on provings and clinical use.

You use a repertory to start the remedy search by matching the symptoms you're seeing with those in the book. This free online resource is both a Materia Medica and Repertory.

Example (simplified):
Symptom: Ear pain, worse at night
Remedies listed: Chamomilla, Pulsatilla, Belladonna
Dose lightly, watch, and wait
Dose will depend on whether the issue is chronic or acute. In acute conditions such as travel sickness, give one or two pellets/ pillules (or a single liquid drop) of the 30C or 200C potency, dissolve under the tongue, and wait. Improvement should follow without needing repeated doses. If nothing changes after two or three attempts, re-evaluate your choice. I lean towards 30C and have had great success with this potency.

What we will cover next

Over the coming weeks we will dive into individual remedies such as Arnica, Aconite, and Nux vomica, exploring when to use them, how to recognise their keynote symptoms, and practical dosing tips. A comprehensive online course is also in the works, taking you from first-aid prescribing to managing chronic conditions.

Our family experience

My own household kit has travelled from camping trips in the Flinders Ranges and outback SA to Bali and long-haul flights to Europe, handling everything from tonsilitis, Bali Belly, headaches and toddler bumps. These successes give me confidence to share the same methods with you.

I purchased the Martin & Pleasance Large Kit which comes with a First Aid book and Prescriber. If I want to add single remedies, I often get them from Newtons Compounding Pharmacy . I prefer pillules/ globules for ease of dosing. They also have an affordable starter kit with 9 remedies . I haven't used this, but it seems quite good value.

Have you ever used homeopathy in your home? Studying Homeopathy at Endeavour College of Natural Health was a game changer for me in the world of Naturopathy. I can't wait to teach you more.
